OziEXPLORER USER COMMENTS

"The Ozi Explorer GPS mapping program has proven to be an excellent tool, we use it regularly in support of our Environmental Consulting services both in the office and out in the field. Ozi allows us to make more effective use of portable GPS technology and commercially available digital maps. Ozi Explorer is practical and straight forward, easy to learn, and has a good selection of features for using geo-referenced map and drawing files.

We currently use a mix 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scale (NTS series) maps produced by Spectrum Digital Imaging (SDI) for our work areas in Western Canada. Having the maps in a digital format makes it considerably easier to store and access them quickly whether working in the office or in the truck. The image quality and geo-referenced accuracy of the SDI maps is excellent even when zoomed several times.

We use hand held GPS units to collect various types of information in the field, and then transfer this data through Ozi onto the SDI maps. This process allows us to view and evaluate our information whether we are using it for; navigation, distances and area calculations, outlining assessed areas, building field drawings, or simply marking the location of something we want to visit again in the future.

The Ozi Explorer/SDI map combination is an excellent way to view, manage and communicate geo-referenced information, which makes many location documentation tasks much easier."

"I recently worked on a project which required travelling 7000 km over the full length and width of Alberta, visiting 24 different natural gas transmission meter station sites. The project schedule was such that we only had 15 days to complete the work. Since we had to spend as many as 4 hours at each site, there was no time for navigation problems.

Using a GPS, linked to a laptop computer, with Ozi Explorer installed, we were able to drive directly to all of these stations with out any problems. Consider that all of these stations were in remote oil field locations, with constantly changing roads, and additional roads being added, no map could have been accurate.

The one time we double checked our route to the site with the company provided paper map, because of road changes, the paper map would have added considerable time to our trip. The 1-250,000 scale Alberta base map enabled easy route planning and quick access to more detailed maps.

With only a couple of hours training I was more than comfortable using the GPS to navigate. A map tells you where you want to end up. A GPS and Ozi Explorer tells you how to get there, where you are along the way, and how to get home, all via the most effective route. I can honestly say without the GPS we would have been lost several times. The hours this would have cost us would have negatively impacted our schedule, to the project's detriment. The time the GPS saved us travelling enabled us to make up for other challenges we hadn't foreseen."
