PHOTO RETROSPECTIVE: DISCOVERY IN GALLERY

Freddy MercuryWhat's new this month?
We will rock you. Well, besides a Solio Magnesium solar recharger, Apple's iPhone 3G, the recently announced Garmin Oregon touch screen, a fantastic selection of Humminbird marine units and a new UNESCO World Heritage Site in Canada (New Brunswick), there is Freddie Mercury.

'Freddy'
There are great stories in this website. In 2008, it's easy to show your photos online, but at the start of this millenium, GPS Central's Gallery was a chance for a group of GPS novices and enthusiasts to hear about each other's travels and set-ups. We published it all, still do.

So, it's a kicking archive of photos, which you can visit anytime. A few stories are tucked deep though, or maybe they're part of a discontinued GPS unit in The Vault... We find them again mostly by accident, as was the case with Freddie in Switzerland (or freddy.gif).

ASK THE STAFF! We're talking to Holly today - about her recent road trip to Golden B.C for whitewater rafting...

Q. You seem upset. How was the Garmin nuvi 350 this road trip?
A. Calgary to Golden is one road! The Trans-Canada Highway! It's the number One! At no point should I be told to turn left in 500 meters. (OK, it happenend once.) And what's with Trail='Track' and Drive='Doctor'? It's quirky alright... Macleod Track...

Q. Has it always been this way?
The TreeA. No, it got me to the wedding in central Alberta last month. It was really good, because it was night and I had no idea where I was. The meeting place, ceremony and reception were all in different towns. I wandered around Vancouver with it another time, even got to the tree stump on a bus. We drove to Montana with it, no problemo. OK, maybe the instruction to drive through the mountain was odd...

Q. I checked Mary's Motel. It's not the nuvi's fault. Mary's doesn't have a street address listing, just a box number. Navteq gets its data from street listings.
A. [Cusses.]

Check your unit. Manufacturers offer firmware updates for glitches, overall performance, maps or new features. Please note that a manufacturer is your best partner and resource for the care of your GPS product.

We currently know about updates for the Garmin Colorado 300 v2.54 (July 1, 2008) and Magellan Triton 300 Product Support - update 1.27 which first requires a VantagePoint download. Also see, for instance, Garmin's main updates page for all units and MapTech Lease Tracker updates!
