THE MOVE
By George Valentine CFO
After a third nervous breakdown, many things started to go more smoothly.
When the move all started (Oct/06), we packed up the old place, which we outgrew in about 2004. Some people said such a small location was kind of cruel for staff (but who wanted to move? so difficult!! such a big project!!).
Our warehouse and shipping department were in the basement, with access provided by a small dumbwaiter and a narrow stairway. Also, there was no back door, so everything – including customers, shipping and staff – came in and went out the front door.
After the stock was packed, brought upstairs and shipped to the new location, we enjoyed the roomy atmosphere - until the dual operation of running a business and settling in with new staff, computer network connections and big plans for the future all collided in, well, a swim of confusion. This was the second nervous breakdown.
The third was a more vague experience. As my blood pressure yanked the arteries, with my wife and I stranded in New York City in the March winter storm, and staff wondering why I was logged on and working at all (…laptop), a strange event occurred: acceptance.
It was going well! New office furniture was installed. The warehouse was secure. Stock came and went from the back, the shipping department! I appreciated the longtime staffs’ reliability and candour. We have a new logo, new store signs, a new fridge and very nice washrooms. And Dave’s vision for the GPS business is exciting and bold.
What’s not to like about everything.
