GETTING STARTED WITH PATCHMAP DisPatch™
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Garmin: A portable GPS Manufacturing Company
MapSource: A Garmin software program that facilitates displaying map data both on a PC and on a Garmin GPS receiver. This software either comes with a Garmin GPS receiver or is bought separately. ‘Mapsource’ also refers to the type of data used by the program.
nRoute: A Garmin PC software program that mimics a GPS screen when receiving GPS data from an external Garmin GPS unit. Used on a laptop while driving and utilizes ‘Mapsource’ data sets. Can NOT load maps to GPS units.
PatchMap: A ‘Mapsource’ type map data set made by SkyBase Geomatic Solutions. This data set can be used seamlessly with the above products. They are sold by the 1:250,000 Mapsheets and preconfigured into ‘Areas’.
DIFFERENT WAYS TO BUY AND USE PATCHMAP
1. Buy a CD that will load all of the purchased area straight onto your Garmin GPS receiver (via a computer) called ‘OnBoard’
• Mapsource or nRoute NOT required
• note the limitations of the Garmin unit that you own.
• 1 Mapsheet = about 3 mb
2. Buy a micro SD card or Garmin storage card with PatchMap already loaded (no computer required) called ‘OnBoard SD’
• just plug it in – switch from one data set to another by changing cards
• note: Some Garmin models have no SD or micro SD slots [expandable memory], so check first.
3. Buy a Garmin GPS unit that is bundled with a Mapsource product or buy a MapSource product such as MetroGuide Canada V4 (suggested).
• Next buy a PatchMap CD called ‘DisPatch’
• After loading the Mapsource product, load PatchMap’s DisPatch product. This will allow the use of PatchMap data to Mapsource (the program) and nRoute. Any number of PatchMap Mapsheets can then be loaded onto any Garmin GPS receiver, up to the unit’s capacity.
If you use the PatchMap data sets for commercial use and dispatching to more than one crew, you should be contacting us to:
• Have the ability to load more than one computer
• Get a subscription for continual updates (original price x 25%)
• Pay for the extra usage from which you’re benefiting. See PC DisPatch Cost Calculator here.
