suunto Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast Tuomas Vohlonen in Finland. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier compass needle, better readings and a new level of accuracy.

The first marine compass, Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. A couple of years later, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees. In 1960s the compass range grew further, and Suunto introduced its first diving compass - initiated by the divers themselves.

The development of a wristop computer including a GPS system was launched in 1999. Practical work included several challenging phases, such as designing a receiver antenna that would function properly in all positions. The antenna solution and the method used to find and calculate the satellite positions are currently patent-protected. The application uses the rearth's magnetic field and a chronometer for an approximate initial positioning, which enable the correct satelites several minutes quicker during start-up.
